Fiancé(e)s of Australian citizens or permanent residents can apply for the prospective marriage Visa which, if granted, will be valid for nine (9) months.
The Prospective Marriage Visa is a Family Visa that enables fiancé(e)s of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens to apply to marry their Australian partner and then seek to remain permanently in Australia on the basis of that relationship.
The applicant must enter Australia, marry their sponsoring Australian fiancé(e) and apply for the spouse Visa all within this nine-month period. The Prospective Marriage Visa grants you full work and study rights. You are also able to access Medicare (government subsidised health care)if you are in Australia and have made an application for the Spouse Visa.
With this visa, you:
- must enter Australia before you marry your fiance(é)
- may leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you wish before your visa ceases (nine (9) months after visa grant)
- can work in Australia
- can apply for a Spouse visa in Australia after you marry your fiance(é)
- can study, but you will not have access to government funding
- may use Australia's medical expenses and hospital care assistance scheme, Medicare, but only if you are in Australia and have already applied for a Spouse visa.
